Benefits of TMR Cardiac Treatments

TMR has shown to be very beneficial in treating angina sufferers. Angina sufferers who have undergone TMR are likely to have less angina symptoms. They are also more likely to:
  • Have less chest pain;
  • Have a better quality of life;
  • Have increased blood flow to the heart;
  • Be able to exercise longer;
  • Need less time in hospital.
Risks Associated with TMR
There is a low risk of complications occurring as a result of TMR. Here are some possible risks, but they are not likely to occur for most people.
  • Damage to the mitral valve;
  • Heart failure;
  • Arrhythmia;
  • Low blood pressure;
  • Accumulation of blood in the sac around the heart
  • Heart attack.
Life After TMR
Activities after the surgery may need to be limited for a while. The doctor will suggest activities that can be undertaken and set up a cardiac rehabilitation program. Some patients will still need to take medication. Regular check-ups with a doctor or cardiologist will be needed.

For severe angina sufferers who have not responded to other treatment, a bypass is usually the first option. However, there are cases where a bypass is not appropriate. TMR is a good option on these occasions, as it allows areas to be treated that may not otherwise be able to be treated. Tests such as echocardiograms and cardiac catheterization will show the best method of treating the hearts of angina sufferers. Transmyocardial revascularization is a fairly new treatment, but it has already given many angina sufferers relief that they would not otherwise be able to get.
