Simvastatin is one of the most effective drugs for lowering cholesterol levels. It also lowers HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) more than the other statins. It is one of the most expensive drugs. Simvastatin is not suitable for pregnant women. Simvastatin was part of a study that showed that statins could reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke.
Atorvastatin. Atorvastatin is also known by the brand name of Lipitor. Unlike other statins, atorvastatin can reduce triglyceride levels in the blood. Higher doses of an atorvastatin drug will reduce cholesterol more than lower doses. The doctor will need to check cholesterol levels regularly, so that the right dose can be taken to achieve the desired result. Pravastatin. Pravastatin is also known by the brand name of Pravachol. Pravastatin reduces the levels of Hs-CRP. High levels of Hs-CRP may lead to a heart attack, stroke or death. Pravastatin lowers the total level of cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. It also increases HDL cholesterol. Pravastatin reduces the risk for heart attacks, strokes and death. Using pravastatin with nicoticin acid or gemfibrozil can cause problems with the liver or muscles. There is strong clinical evidence for the effectiveness of pravastatin.
Rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin is also known by the brand name of Crestor. It is a new statin drug on the market. It appears to reduce LDL-cholesterol levels more than other statin drugs. It has been shown to cause a muscle disorder and a kidney disorder with high doses. Clinical evidence for Rosuvastatin is not as high as for other drugs.
