Treatment For MVP

For most patients with mitral valve prolapse, prognosis is very good without any specific treatment.Although they will need to have examinations every one to five years, depending on the severity of the MVP and whether there is any mitral regurgitation. Patients with mitral regurgitation will usually have to have an examination every year.

MVP patients may need to take precautions when undergoing any procedure that might allow bacteria into the bloodstream. Antibiotics may be needed before minor surgery and dental work. Amoxicillin is commonly used for this. People who are allergic to penicillin may need an azithromycin dosage. Clindamycin medication may also be given as an antibiotic. Medication like azithromycin and clindamycin uses drugs that are not in the penicillin family.

Patients who have severe MVP, or who are suffering from any MVP symptoms may need mitral valve prolapse medication. The two main different types of drugs are beta-blockers and calcium-blockers. Beta-blockers increase the size of the left ventricle. They include atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol. Calcium blockers are used for patients who cannot take beta-blockers.

Can You Prevent MVP?

You can not prevent MVP Syndrome from occurring. However, you can prevent some of the associated problems that occur with people who suffer from MVP. It is important to tell your dentist that you suffer from MVP, and to take antibiotics before any dental work or surgery. Calories that are eaten but not used up immediately are converted into triglycerides. Though most triglycerides are found stored in fat tissue, low levels of it are also carried in the blood as very low density lipoproteins(VLDL). High LDL along with a raised level of blood triglycerides can greatly increase the risk of heart disease.

When To Seek Medical Advice

Most people do not realize they have MVP until a routine check-up alerts the doctor to the problem. If you have a family history of MVP, you may want to ask your doctor to perform a test with a stethoscope. If you have been diagnosed with MVP, you should go to your doctor for regular check-ups and make appointments if you experience any MVP symptoms, any symptoms of a bacterial infection or any shortness of breath. Your doctor will assess the MVP symptoms and treatment will be provided.

MVP can create major health problems and so it must be regularly assessed. However, most people with mitral valve prolapse syndrome can lead normal healthy lives.
