Set your diet right with food aimed at lowering cholesterol

Lowering cholesterol foods by eating right kind of food is the healthiest way to fight cholesterol as there are many types of food that aid in lowering cholesterol. It is important to keep one's cholesterol levels under check as increase beyond certain specified limits makes one prone to heart attacks and even susceptible to strokes. Therefore one should resort to eating foods that help in lowering the level of cholesterol.

Nuts are one of the most misunderstood food types that have been receiving negative feedback for their fat content. This fat content, now experts say, is full of unsaturated fats that is said to be good. This helps in lowering the LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) and increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). One should make it a point to consume at least one handful of nuts everyday. If you don't like to eat them plain, roast them or even use them as a sandwich spread. However, caution should also be exercised when eating nuts as the amount of nuts should be kept a mere handful and nothing more, as eating large number of nuts could result in weight gain. The level of cholesterol that is lowered will depend upon the kind of nut that is consumed. Walnuts are considered the best food for lowering cholesterol.

Increasing the fibre content is one of the biggest secrets for a diet that aids in lowering cholesterol. Soluble fibres help in reducing the absorption of cholesterol in the bloodstream and so adding fruits into your diet will act as a major plus for lowering cholesterol. Apart from fruits like apples, prunes and banana which are high in fibre content, one can even opt for oatmeal or oat bran for lowering the levels of cholesterol.

Olive oil is another must in a diet aimed at lowering cholesterol levels. Olive oil is rich in anti oxidants that are considered heart healthy and act by lowering the bad LDL cholesterol while the levels of the good cholesterol remains the same. Olive oil is also fattening and so one should only use 2 teaspoons of olive oil for sautéing vegetables or it can even be used as a dip. The best form of olive oil available in the market is the extra-virgin olive oil that is not processed as much as the other varieties of olive oil and is also richer in anti oxidants. Another note of caution is that olive oil which is labelled "light" is processed a lot more than the other types of olive oil and though it contains lesser amounts of anti oxidants it is as fattening as the other types of olive oil.

A diet for lowering cholesterol should also include fish oils as they contain omega 3 fatty acids. These are extremely rich in anti oxidants and have been in use for ages for their extremely good heart friendly properties. The fish oil may be obtained by consuming certain fish or in the form of capsules. Salmon, Herring and Mackerel are some of the popular fish that contain oil rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Vegetarians need not fret as flaxseed oil and canola oil also contain omega 3 fatty acid, though not in as high a proportion as fish oil.

Lowering cholesterol without the use of drugs will help one lead a healthier and a more active life without worrying about the intake of pills. However constant monitoring of the levels of cholesterol should be done to keep a check on the effect of these foods that aid lowering cholesterol.

It should be noted, however, that a diet of foods that help in lowering cholesterol alone is not enough to control the level of cholesterol. One should also refrain from eating food that is rich in cholesterol. Red meat and egg yolk should be avoided completely and one should resort to eating lean meat and vegetables as a way of cutting down on the cholesterol intake. Diet that is low in cholesterol containing foods will permit one to reap the benefits of a diet that is aimed at lowering the levels of cholesterol in the body.

Diet for lowering cholesterol should not be a temporary phase and it should be adopted as a means to a healthier way of life. This would ensure that one leads a life that is aimed at keeping the levels of cholesterol low and thereby ensures that one lowers cholesterol without drugs.

A lifestyle change should be accommodated into one's life and this will aid immensely in controlling the cholesterol levels. Appreciating and enjoying the process of eating food that lowers cholesterol will help one stick to the diet as a way of life. Therefore, food which is found to lower cholesterol should be prepared carefully keeping in mind one's taste and preferences. If you are cooking for a loved one and would like to ensure that he/she should lower cholesterol without drugs then preparing sumptuous meals with foods that lower cholesterol is the key to helping them stick to the diet.
