  • Follow an effective diet. Many people think that eating less or starving themselves is the way to lose weight. The best thing to do is to eat healthy. Cut out the foods that are high in fats and salts and incorporate more fresh fruit, lean meats, and water. Consult your health care professional or a qualified nutritionist and literally re-learn how to fill your plate with food that will satisfy your hunger but won't pack on the pounds.
  • ExerciseSimply get up and move. Start with walking and force yourself to go just a little bit farther every day. Join a gym and work with a personal trainer if possible, but above all, just get moving. (Always consult with your doctor before beginning a new program of exercise.)
  • Build staminaDon't fall into the trap of exercising the same amount every day. You want to build your stamina by as much as 50%. It won't happen over night, but always remember to push yourself to do just a little more. Keep a record of how far you've walked or how many repetitions of an exercise you have performed. Challenge yourself!
  • Avoid snacking on junk food, high fat and high cholesterol foodstuffs, and items rich in salt and sugar. Many people will work on developing a healthy diet at meal time but destroy their good efforts with snacks. Find substitutes. If you love the crunch of a potato chip, try the crunch of an apple slice instead. If you crave sodas, switch to bottled water with a squeeze of lime. We all want to snack, but the wrong snacks will torpedo your efforts to lose weight.
  • Ask for support from family and friends.Your family and friends are the very people who can help you the most with your goal. If you are living with people who prefer to be couch potatoes rather than be active, you will have to force yourself not to give in and join them. If you can't get the emotional support you need at home, join a weight loss support group, but above all, find someone who will be your "cheerleader" and who will help you on those days when all you want to do is eat all the wrong things.
These are the facts and realities about the connection between obesity and heart disease. By the power of information, you are on the first step toward protecting yourself against heart attacks and obesity. You can start living a healthier and fitter life today!
