Cholesterol lowering drugs may be necessary for people who have high cholesterol and are at risk of developing health problems because of their high cholesterol. Quite often, lifestyle changes will be suggested first and cholesterol reducing drugs will only be prescribed when the lifestyle changes do not effectively lower the cholesterol levels. Usually, lifestyle changes will still need to carried out while the drugs are being taken. If a person is at a high risk of developing cholesterol-related diseases, then drugs to lower cholesterol may be prescribed immediately.
List of Popular Cholesterol Lowering Drugs
There are a number of cholesterol lowering drugs that your doctor may prescribe. The types of drugs your doctor prescribes will depend on your cholesterol levels, risk factors and other medical conditions. Sometimes two or more drugs will be taken together in order to lower cholesterol.
NIACIN
Niacin is a water-soluble B vitamin that is also known by the name of Nicotonic acid. It improves the lipoproteins in the body and lowers the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and triglyceride levels. It also raises the HDL cholesterol levels (or good cholesterol levels). There is immediate release and timed release niacin drugs. Niacin side effects include hot flushes, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea and peptic ulcers. It can also contribute to liver problems, gout and high blood sugar. Niacin is not recommended for people with diabetes.
BILE-ACID SEQUESTRANTS
There are different types of bile-acid sequestrants, including cholestyramine powder, colestipol and colesevelam. Bile-acid sequestrants lower the LDL (or bad) cholesterol. They work by binding bile acids in the intestines and excreting them through the stool. The liver then converts cholesterol into more bile acids, lowering cholesterol levels. Bile-acid sequestrants are often used in conjunction with a statin or niacin drug. Side effects from bile-acid sequestrants include constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss and flatulence. They also reduce the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.
What Is Cholestyramine Powder?
Cholestyramine powder is a bile-acid sequestrant. It is used to lower high cholesterol levels. Like other bile acid sequestrants, it removes the bile acids from the body. Cholestyramine powder may cause bleeding, constipation, gallstones, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcers or problems that can lead to kidney disease.
STATINS
Statin drugs are often prescribed to lower cholesterol. There are different types of statin drugs including norvir, fortovase, pravachol, zocor, liitor, baycol and lescol. Although statins are very effective in lowering cholesterol levels, the dangers of statin drugs mean they need to be taken carefully and after looking at the risks and possible side effects. Statin drugs can cause muscular disorder. Sometimes, a co-enzyme Q10 supplement will be taken in conjunction with the drug.
