They work by binding bile acids in the intestines and excreting them through the stool. The liver then converts cholesterol into more bile acids, lowering cholesterol levels. Bile-acid sequestrants are often used in conjunction with a statin or niacin drug. Side effects from bile-acid sequestrants include constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss and flatulence. They also reduce the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.

Cholestyramine powder is a bile-acid sequestrant. It is used to lower high cholesterol levels. Like other bile acid sequestrants, it removes the bile acids from the body. Cholestyramine powder may cause bleeding, constipation, gallstones, hemorrhoids, stomach ulcers or problems that can lead to kidney disease.
