Treating High Cholesterol Levels with Policosanol

One of the most recent tools for fighting the rising levels of cholesterol in America is policosanol. But, are the benefits of policosanol real? And what is the drug policosanol? Is there a relation between policosanol and cholesterol?
There are many questions regarding this new option for fighting cholesterol, so let's find more about it.

What Is Policosanol?

America is going through it's worst health crisis in it's history. And it isn't being caused by a terrible disease or a genetically altered epidemic, launched by terrorists. The saddest thing is that the source of this health crisis is our way of life. After decades of struggling ourselves, trying to create a wonderful, free, country to live in, we are being seduced by the abundance of resources. In this case, food.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from the Department of Health and Human Services, 30% of the adult population is obese. That means that approximately, 60 million persons in the United States of America have serious weight problems.

Unfortunately, this bad example is affecting our children too. Since 1980, the percentage of young people with overweight problems has multiplied by more than 3. That means that almost 10 million young people are obese. As a consequence, a huge percentage of the population is suffering from cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a lipid or, in layman terms, a type of fat. Most of it is generated by our bodies, and there are two kinds of it: good cholesterol (also known as high-density lipoprotein or HDL) and bad cholesterol (also known as low-density lipoprotein or LDL). We need cholesterol in our bodies, but our excesses generates problems.

That's why many companies around the world are looking for new products that can fight the rising levels of cholesterol (imagine how big is this industry!). Among the many solutions that have been proposed, Policosanol has made it's stand in the market.

It's origins goes back to the island of Cuba. How so? Simply, Cuba is known as the main producer and exporter of sugar in the world due to the conditions of the island. No wonder then that it's scientists explored new uses for this commodity. As a result, it was determined that one of the main benefits of policosanol is that it could be used for fighting cholesterol.
