Supplementary Treatment For High Cholesterol

While most doctors often recommend changes in diet and exercise for the improvement of cholesterol levels, various supplement ingredients may be quite helpful in reducing enhanced low - density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol,
in elevating low high -density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol, and in the improvement of the LDL/HDL ratio. Some of these supplements also reduce triglycerides. These supplements include policosanols and guggulipid extracts.

What are Policosanols, what are the side effects of policosanols, and what are the benefits of policosanol? Policosanols are plant derived materials, a waxy –like substance, derived from sugar cane or rice bran wax. Its usage in treatment is found to significantly increase HDL, and to significantly reduce total cholesterol levels and LDL.It acts through the liver, and is proved generally safe by clinical tests, but has a few mild side- effects. Drug interactions have not yet been well studied.
