Myocardial Infacction

Myocardial infarction is popularly called as heart attack. It occurs when a particular area of heart muscle dies or damaged due to the poor supply of oxygen to that area. Mostly heart attacks are caused by a clot that blocks any of the coronary arteries.

Usually the coronary artery that has been already narrowed by the changes caused by atherosclerosis is the ideal location for the clot. The fat build up or atherosclerotic plague inside the artery wall may get cracked at times. This results in a clot which is also called as thrombus.

Consequently, the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle is interrupted. It causes death of heart muscles of a particular area. So the remaining heart muscles should compensate for the weakened or dead areas. As a result, sudden stress may lead to heart attack. In many cases, heart attack patients succumb to death before seeking medical help.
