Balloon Angioplasty

Balloon angioplasty refers to a procedure that is used to open a blocked or narrowed artery. Arteries become narrowed or blocked due to fat deposits called plague. This condition is referred in medical terms as atherosclerosis. So in order to open a blocked artery, angioplasty is used.

During this procedure, a small wire with the assistance of X-ray is passed through a narrowed artery. Following this a small balloon is passed through the guide wire into the narrowed section of artery again with the guidance of x-ray. The balloon is then inflated to widen the narrowed or blocked artery.

Further a small amount of dye or angiogram is injected to highlight the blood flow through arteries. At this point, the doctors will check for any possible blockage in the vessels leading to the heart. Later the balloon catheter is moved near the blockage and the balloon on the end is inflated. Consequently, the blocked vessel is opened and proper blood flow is restored.
