Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation refers to a condition in which there is a disorder in the heart rhythm. In this condition the heart does not beat effectively. Though this is not a life threatening condition, people with it are vulnerable to blood clots and stroke. Generally, the atria and ventricles contract in a coordinated manner. But when the atria are induced to contract very quickly and differently from the normal activity, then this condition is said to be artrial fibrillation and flutter.

This condition is as the result of impulses that are transmitted to the ventricles in an improper manner or because of some impulses that fail to transmit. As a result, the ventricles beat irregularly causing irregular pulse in atrial fibrillation.

At times, if the atrial fibrillation is caused by a condition called sick sinus syndrome, the verticals may beat much slowly than that of normal. So during atrial fibrillation the ventricles either beat too fast or slow. As a result, the ventricles fail to pump the required blood to the body.
