Aortic stenosis

The aorta refers to the large artery in the left ventricle of the heart. Aortic stenosis refers to the narrowing of the aortic valve of the heart. It is condition where there is a hindrance in the heart's aortic valve. As a result it is prevented from opening properly and the flow of blood is blocked from the left ventricle to the aorta.

Aortic stenosis is also called as aortic valve stenosis. Aortic stenosis is caused by a variety of disorders. It is said that rheumatic fever which refers to a complication that is caused by an untreated strep throat is the major cause for this condition.

Some of the other causes for this condition include calcification of the valve, congenital abnormalities and presence of history of other valve diseases, coronary artery disease or heart murmur. This condition occurs approximately in five out of every ten thousand people. It is widely prevalent among men than women.
