Amiodarone Treatment

Amiodarone treatment is effective when patients have chronic heart failure. It can improve the heart functions and sympathetic nerve activity. It has many side effects however and some are potentially fatal. It is generally used when other treatment has failed and can correct life-threatening heartbeat problems by slowing nerve impulses in the heart and working on the tissue. This medicine can be taken orally or through regular injections. It is necessary to see a doctor to keep an eye on the progress of the patient. Regular eye exams should be taken also. The patient may be required to carry a medical identification card that declares the patient is using this treatment.

The skin can become extra sensitive to sunlight both during and for several months after the treatment has stopped, sunburn can even occur through clothing so the patient must be extra careful when outdoors. Other effects can be changes in the vision including blurriness and a blue-grey colour may appear on the skin. This colour will eventually fade however. Dizziness and numbness in the fingers and toes can also frequently occur because of this treatment. Serious illness can be caused by the use of this treatment therefore the patient must consider carefully the effects of amiodarone before beginning the treatment.
