Congestive heart problems are becoming very common Congestive heart failure is, unfortunately, a very common type of heart problem that can be caused by a number of factors. In our present day society with a lot of stress and poor diets heart trouble is a serious concern for people in all age groups. Since the sixties many types of treatments have been developed for congestive heart problems. However congestive heart failure is still the number one reason why people over 65 are hospitalized. In many cases the heart has not stopped performing but the heart muscle has been weakened significantly. Due to this the heart is not able to perform normally and blood is not pumped around in the body fast enough to meet oxygen and nutrient levels in the blood as would be the case in a healthy person. Blood pressure problems may damage the heart and artery disease could increase the risk of serious heart problems such as a heart attack. The symptoms of congestive heart problems such as swelling of the feet and ankles (as the kidneys retain fluids) and congestion around the stomach area are common. Diets combined with (at first gentle) exercise and medication can help people who are experiencing heart problems in the early stages. Losing weight is important and treatments such as widening arteries or heart surgery are more and more common as our diets and a lack of attention for a healthy lifestyle are causing more heart problems every year. Regular health checks (especially for blood pressure and heart rate) can help prevent heart problems. |
